Our Story
A Girl At A Time Sierra Leone was born out of the personal experiences and unwavering determination of its founder, Alimatu Dimonekene MBE. A survivor of female genital mutilation (FGM) and a fierce advocate for women’s rights, Alimatu's journey has been one of resilience, courage, and an unrelenting commitment to justice.
Growing up in Sierra Leone, Alimatu witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of gender-based violence and harmful practices on women and girls in her community. These experiences ignited a passion within her to fight for change and to protect the rights of the most vulnerable.
For over a three decades Alimatu became a leading voice in the fight against FGM and other forms of violence against women and girls. Her work as a pro-rights activist, both in Sierra Leone and internationally, has been recognized with numerous accolades, including the prestigious MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for her services to women’s rights. Driven by her deep sense of responsibility and the belief that change begins with education and empowerment, Alimatu founded - A Girl At A Time Sierra Leone” to create a platform where young people could be equipped with the tools and knowledge to advocate for their rights and the rights of others.
The organization works to dismantle the systems of violence and oppression that continue to threaten the safety and well-being of women and girls. Alimatu’s vision is to see an end to all forms of violence against women and girls, and her leadership continues to inspire the organization's mission to create a safer, more equitable world for future generations.
