Female Genital Mutilation in Sierra Leone

Female genital mutilation also known as circumcision or cutting that takes place within the Bondo Society is a construct of systems that drive rape and all other forms of sexual violence and abuse of our women and girls in Sierra Leone.

Female genital mutilation is a serious form of violence act according to the World Health Organization.

In almost all communities in Sierra Leone women and girls are cut as part of passage into womanhood. Female genital mutilation also known as female circumcision is often embedded within social norms.

Often women and girls are cut in the name of tradition and culture.

According to Deutsche Welle over 86% of women and girls already cut in Sierra Leone. Women and girls are mainly cut to appease their culture and traditions.

There are no health benefits in FGM.
